In every single moment... of every day... of everyone's life... in all ages, times and places... a web of thinking and feeling, informing action, is continually being spun out; determining how the unique individual is interpreting this moment and creating the reality of the next moment. In many circumstances this a very helpful and positive process. For instance, when engaged upon a task that requires concentration and focus we need to be constantly referencing our personal skill and knowledge base in order to make wise decisions. We would have little faith in, for example a doctor, if we didn't trust that they were inwardly "consulting" a database of medical knowledge and remedies when listening to the description of our symptoms.

However, in many other circumstances of life, the constant "inner chatter" is not that helpful. Try this simple experiment. Stop reading this, close your eyes and turn your awareness to what is happening in your inner thought world. Just observe it without trying to change it. What is going on ?? Are you quiet or is there a constant "background hum" of mental/emotional activity ? For a large number of people this is happening unconsciously. Often we are so preoccupied with what is going on out there, trying to change it to suit ourselves, that we lose sight of what is going on in here. We are not "self-aware". We are unaware of either what we are thinking and feeling, or the way that this is influencing our life experience.
Life is happening in this moment. This moment is all we ever have. Every single experience that we have ever had or ever will have occurs NOW. It can't be any other way. And yet, if you observe the world of inner thought that is constantly being churned out, you will discover that it is almost completely composed of references to the past and the future. Specifically it is composed of references to pain and pleasure in the past, references to pain and pleasure in the future. We could say, and this has been continually confirmed by psychologists, that our lives are a process of constantly trying to generate pleasure and avoid pain. Obviously the nature of pleasure/pain varies for each unique individual. For some, it may be a preoccupation with the pleasures of the senses. For some it may be the pleasure attached to responsibly providing for our family; or living a life rich in meaning; or helping others less fortunate than ourselves; or doing something worthwhile with our life.... For most, it is simply to be happy.
Such a simple, uncontroversial and unanimously agreed objective... Why then is the world so full of stress, anxiety and suffering ? One answer is to blame others. Another answer, leading to a path of self-awareness and self-transformation, is to look at the nature of our own thought and feeling patterns and the way that this is either creating happiness for ourselves or not. As stated, the nature of our life experience is being constantly, in this moment, determined by the nature of our thoughts and feelings. Whatever happens to us is subjected to the filter, "tinted spectacles" if you will, of our own self. Thoughts and feelings inspire actions. All these things together determine whether or not we are happy. All these things have been acquired and built in our present lifetime. All these things CAN be changed.
Self-transformation begins with self-awareness. Meditation, in all it's many forms, is a basic technique to bring awareness from its habitual focus in the outer world to the inner world. From a position where thoughts and feelings are chaotic, unconscious and unfocussed, one moves to a point of being able to "work on oneself". This can be described as giving the ability to consciously and purposefully focus on particular chosen aspects of the individuality. Most of us are to some degree split personalities; a basic split being between our true nature and that which we have been taught by others; parents, school, society etc., to become. Often, when we experience personal conflict, it can be traced to conflicting tendencies within ourselves. Self-awareness gives us a valuable tool for being able to discriminate on these issues and CHOOSE where to focus our intention. The latest scientific knowledge about quantum physics tells us that the nature of reality is determined by the "intention" of the witnessing consciousness. In other words, what we experience is an expression of what we "intend" to experience. What we intend to experience is determined by our consciousness, thoughts and feelings.
Please remember that the whole aim of this website is NOT to tell you how to live your life; rather to provide resouces and pointers to help you more effectively manage a self-directed process of change, if that is wanted. However, for all people, it is the "beliefs" they hold about themselves and the nature of things that determine what they feel able to do in life. Beliefs can either empower and inspire us to wonderful things, or they can hold us back. Importantly, beliefs can be changed and there are simple techniques that enable us to do this. What the particular belief is doesn't necessarily matter, compared to a self-directed judgement as to whether that belief is "useful" or not, helpful or harmful, able to lead to happiness & deep fulfillment or not. Most modern "therapies" and personal empowerment technques; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) etc., begin with this understanding. (See bookshop for further details)
Other techniques and approaches can use brainwave entrainment technologies and subliminal suggestion to assist a process of self-directed transformation. Inspirit marketplace provides links for purchasing some of these resources while the bookshop aims to provide access to the best available literature on the themes.

Mind Into Matter. Alchemists of old attempted to make sense of the universe - to discover the connection between mind and matter. Some of today's scientists, in particular quantum physicists, are doing the same. In his latest contribution to the study of consciousness, physicist Fred Alan Wolf reveals what he calls the new alchemy - a melding of the ideas of the old alchemists and the new scientists to reach a fuller understanding of mind and matter. An elegant book with short, stand-alone chapters, each framed by an alchemical symbol and its definition. Thought-provoking for scientists and lay people alike.
