Put very simply, the Law of Attraction is concerned with the fact that one brings into ones life whatever one thinks about. Generate the thought that "I fancy a cup of tea" and, assuming kettle, water and teabags are to hand, a brew will shortly be in your hands. Whether the means is doing it yourself, instructing your partner to make it, dropping into the nearest cafe etc.. doesn't really matter. Rather, the intent to have a cup of tea is usually followed by the manifestation thereof. There is nothing particularly magical about this, until one begins to delve slightly deeper.
The phrase is closely associated with New Thought beliefs and practises; a century-plus old system of practical spirituality also referred to as "The Religion of Healthy Mindedness", developed in the United States during the mid to late 19th century. The system attracted a very large following amongst women and could quite accurately be described as a feminist movement; in that most of its teachers and students were female. The earliest identifiable proponent of New Thought was Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-66), an American faith healer, student of Mesmerism, and practitioner of hypnosis, who claimed he could heal by mere suggestion. Quimby developed a belief system that included the tenet that illness originated in the mind as a consequence of "erroneous beliefs". Interestingly, this idea is currently subscribed to by most doctors who will testify that many diseases have their origins in "stress"; harmful habits of mind. Scientific drug trials also show that many people are healed of diseases, merely because they ©believe" that they have been given an appropriate remedy.

The Law of Attraction however has even earlier references. Its description as a "Law" derives from its presence as one of the so-called 7 Hermetic Laws, said to have been recorded on the legendary "Emerald Table of Hermes Trismegistus" (thrice blessed Hermes): also believed to be the Egyptian character "Thoth". Advocates of this philosophy hold that the Hermetic Laws underlie and inform Science, all the world Religions, and esoteric systems including Freemasonry. Credence to this view can be found in the latest understanding of quantum physics amongst some theoreticians; holding that nothing substantial actually exists, rather being present as "potential" which comes into apparent being by the "intent" of a witnessing consciousness. The principle Hermetic Law states that the nature of the universe is not "material" at all, rather "spiritual"; again echoing scientific knowledge that even a lump of rock is not actually as solid as we might like to think. It consists mainly of empty space containing the odd quantum of energy zooming along at phenomenal speed; as does everything else in existence.
From the beginning of the twentieth century until the present day, the Law of Attraction is more closely
associated with the creation of personal wealth, as well as the manifestation of any other desire we might
have; possessions, experiences, qualities of character etc.. It is said that Bill Gates studied "The Master
Key" by Charles Haanel prior to creating Microsoft. Techniques such as visualisation, affirmation,
self-hypnosis, brainwave entrainment can all act to change core beliefs and personal thought habits;
creating a psychological and emotional "aura" which magnetically attracts into ones life the desired
outcome; engendering self-belief, self-confidence, positive thinking and a focussed response to life
circumstances as they arise.
Right..... time for a cup of tea.

Brainwave Entrainment. This is based on the understanding that different modes of thought and feeling are associated with different frequencies of electrical activity in the brain.
